CSC 114 Digital Evidence and Computer Crime

This course is designed for students who want to pursure a career in investigation, analysis, and prosecution of computer crime cases. It introduces the student to the basic methods that hackers and criminals use to commit electronic crimes and incidents. Students will be introduced to Computer Forensics in preparation for working with Local, State or Federal government agencies.

The need to successfully prosecute computer crime is becomming more important as the number of cases involving electronic evidence are growing expontentialy. Electronic information resources has produced a demand for information systems security professionals. Along with this demand came a need to ensure that these professionals possess the knowledge to perform the required job functions. To address this need, the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification emerged. This certification guarantees to all parties that the certified individual meets the standard criteria of knowledge and continues to upgrade that knowledge in the field of information systems security. The CISSP initative also serves to enhance the recognition and reputation of the field of information security.

Students enrolled in the Criminal Justice major along with students in the Business major can expand their skills and knowledge to what is required of a Computer Forensics Specialist or Information Technology Security Specialist. This training is a must if your interested in a career in Law Enforcement or Information Technology.

This Center has been awarded the title of Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) and joins the ranks of only 3 other Universities in the State of California that have attained this honor. This designation is jointly sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the spirit of Presidential Decision Directive 63. To receive the designation, the Center had to meet stringent criteria in regards to the curriculum, faculty, research, and demonstrate an institution-wide commitment to information assurance practices and education. It attests to the fact that the curriculum meets the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for Information Systems Security Professionals.
