Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE, (www.sae.org) is
a network of more than 75,000 professionals that specialize in the design,
maintenance, and operation of self-propelled vehicles. Every year SAE along with
Ford, Chrysler, and GM, put on a student design competition called Formula SAE.
Formula SAE is perhaps the highest profile, most
intense student Mechanical Engineering design competition in the world. To
compete in Formula SAE, students must conceive, design, and manufacture an
open-wheeled, formula-style racecar. Restrictions are put on the design of the
engine and frame in order to challenge the students’ knowledge, creativity, and
imagination. The cars are built by teams of students over a period of about one
year, and are taken to Pontiac, Michigan to compete with 140 other Universities
from across the world. The end result is a great experience for young engineers
to take part in a meaningful design project, as well as to learn to work as a
team.
The cars are judged in three different categories:
Static inspection and engineering design, solo performance trials, and high
performance track endurance. These events are scored to determine how well the
car performs. The scores in the various events in the three categories are
weighted and combined to yield a final score, which determines the winner.
